All who trust the Lord, be cheerful and strong.
Psalm 31:24 (CEV*)
There are a number of characteristics one can identify with those who trust the Lord, but David in this verse focuses on two of them. Let's look at them briefly.
Trusting the Lord should make us cheerful. This doesn't mean that everything will be rosy around us. No, we may face many difficulties and tragedies in our lives. And we will have sorrow and grief. But underneath that there will be an abiding joy.
If we trust the Lord, we know God loves us and is with us in all the situations of our life. God will comfort us and heal us if we truly trust Him and accept His tender mercies. We can be secure in the knowledge that His love surrounds us and protects us, and that God will never abandon us. This results in a cheerful outlook on life.
Similarly, trusting the Lord gives us strength. Whatever we may face in life, we know that we can rely on God to give us the strength to do what we need to do. We have nothing to fear, for God is at our side. The strength on which we rely is not the strength of our own bodies and minds, but the unconquerable strength of almighty God.
If we fully trust the Lord, we can join the prophet in saying:
But those who trust the Lord will find new strength.
They will be strong like eagles soaring upward on wings;
they will walk and run without getting tired.
Isaiah 40:31 (CEV*)
Trust in the Lord, dear Friends.
