Friends in Christ Weekly Message
October 18, 2001
May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
Romans 15:13 (NRSV*)
This message is written in loving memory of my mother, who died peacefully in her sleep Tuesday morning. On Monday, she told me she appreciated the weekly messages but thought I should write more about hope.
We face all sorts of difficulties, as well as times of sorrow, in this life. So did the Apostle Paul. With Paul, we need to allow the Holy Spirit to fill us with hope no matter what our particular circumstances or what is going on around us.
I have hope because I believe our loving God is ultimately the supreme power in the universe. I believe Jesus when he told his disciples to "have confidence, I have overcome the world." (John 16:33, Douay Rheims Version)
The hope that God gives is in an ultimate reality that is beyond what we know in this world. If our trust is in that ultimate reality, we can indeed abound in hope and be filled with all joy and peace.
So, dear reader, like Paul, I pray that the God of hope will fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
Bill Samuel
