I am the bread that gives life! No one who comes to me will ever be hungry. No one who has faith in me will ever be thirsty.
John 6:35 (CEV*)
This comes at the conclusion of a dialogue people are having with Jesus. The people were asking for a miracle so that they would know to have faith in him. They referred to the manna that was sent to the Israelites daily during the Exodus.
The people were thinking of the bread that fills our stomachs. Throughout the dialogue, Jesus seeks to get them to focus on the spiritual bread which is much more important.
People look in many places to feed their spirits. They look to gurus who die just as we do. They look to pop spirituality which appears to have substance but is empty inside. They look to forms and rituals, which may have been designed to point us to the substance but aren't the substance themselves. These may satisfy for a time, but ultimately are unfulfilling.
Jesus tells us that He is all we need for our spiritual hunger and thirst. He invites us to come directly to Him for what we need. He is always available to us. There are various ways we use to approach Him, but we must always take care not to focus on the particular method but on Jesus Himself.
Dear Jesus, thank you for providing all I need spiritually. May I draw closer and closer to you, filling myself with the spiritual bread and water that I need which you freely offer in such abundance. Thank you, Jesus.
Bill Samuel
