Jesus answered, "The Scriptures say:
'No one can live only on food.
People need every word that God has spoken.'"
Matthew 4:4 (CEV*)
We can have all the material needs of life, food, shelter, clothing, etc., but does that give us true life? Even if we have all these things in great abundance, we may be unsatisfied and feel we are missing the meaning of life.
Jesus was tested with temptations of the things of this world. But He understood that these were not the most important things in life. He resisted these temptations. Jesus' response to the temptations not only tells us much about Him, but it also is an example to us as we live our lives.
Within each of us there is a spiritual hunger that is not satisfied with all the things the material world and even the world of human relationships can bring. This part of us, the deepest part of us, can only be satisfied by drinking in what God has to offer us.
Seek true life. Spend time daily with God. Read the Bible meditatively, pray and silently listen to God speak. Also find a Christian community with which to listen to God. The spiritual life involves both the individual's very personal relationship with God and life in a community devoted to God. Do not neglect either.
