Friends in Christ Weekly Message
June 22, 2002
Don't be afraid of anyone! Everything that is hidden will be found out, and every secret will be known. Whatever I say to you in the dark, you must tell in the light. And you must announce from the housetops whatever I have whispered to you.
Matthew 10:26-27 (CEV*)
Often we are afraid to speak the truth of the gospel, as we think that we may get a negative response from others. This is true even of those of us in societies where the majority of people are at least nominally Christian, and where there is little danger of being thrown in jail or martyred because we proclaim the gospel. Those to whom Jesus was originally speaking probably faced much greater danger in speaking the gospel than most of us.
We are being asked to take a broader perspective than the opinion of others, the security of our job, or even danger to our physical lives. No matter how people may respond, the truth remains the truth and will ultimately prevail. It is more important to stand for Truth than to look out for our worldly welfare. The eternal verities trump whatever worldly circumstances we may face.
We are told not just to refrain from keeping the gospel to ourselves, but to be bold in proclaiming it. We are to announce it from the housetops!
This is an area in which each of us could stand to examine ourselves and the degree to which we have been faithful. Do we act ashamed of the gospel? Do we repress promptings of the spirit to share the gospel? Are we bold in sharing the truth we have received from Christ?
