Friends in Christ Weekly Message
June 28, 2003
I'm sticking with God (I say it over and over).
He's all I've got left.
God proves to be good to the man who passionately waits,
to the woman who diligently seeks.
It's a good thing to quietly hope,
quietly hope for help from God.
Lamentations 3:24-26 (Message*)
Lamentations was written during the Babylonian exile, the 70-year period in which the Hebrews were in slavery in Babylon. It gives guidance to the faith community on living through pain, loss and suffering. Its wisdom is useful to all generations.
The central message is that God stands with the faithful through even the darkest of circumstances. God can be a source of hope no matter how bleak things may look outwardly. The suffering faithful have believed this and clung to the hope of which this passage speaks in every generation.
No matter what happens to us in life, may we each stick with God. May we passionately wait (reflect on the imagery in that unusual phrase) and diligently seek the proof in our lives that God is good. May we never succumb to desperation, but quietly hope for help from God as long as it is required of us.
