Sing praises to God our King, the ruler of all the earth!
Praise God with songs.
God rules the nations from his sacred throne.
Their leaders come together and are now the people of Abraham's God.
All rulers on earth surrender their weapons, and God is greatly praised!
Psalm 47:6-9 (CEV*)
This psalm may have been a new year's festival song, pointing to a truth that would be realized someday. Then, as now, there were different gods, or conceptions of God, being worshipped in the earth. But this psalm points to the God acknowledged by the Hebrew people as the God of all nations. All nations become the people of Abraham's God.
The psalm proclaims that God, not earthly rulers, is the true sovereign of all nations. It looks to the day when the leaders of every nation will acknowledge that, and put down the weapons they use to combat one another. It tells us to sing praises to God as the one who will eventually be acknowledged as over all people, one human family.
Do we live in the reality that this psalm points to, even though outwardly it doesn't appear to be a present reality? How does the way we live point to the day celebrated in this psalm? Are we singing praises to God our King, the ruler of all the earth?
