Friends in Christ Weekly Message
October 6, 2007

God's Spirit doesn't make cowards out of us. The Spirit gives us power, love, and self-control.
2 Timothy 1:7 (CEV*)

Following Christ won't always be easy. Others may oppose what we do for Christ; even very forcefully. It is tempting to respond to that opposition by not doing what we should - being “cowards” as Paul puts it. But if we are truly filled with God's spirit, we will resist that temptation.

What kind of power does the Spirit give us? It gives us the power to do the right thing. It also allows God's power to be manifest through us.

Unlike corrupt or tyrannical power, this kind of power comes with love and self-control. We are empowered to act out of love, and we are able to control any impulses in us which would move in the wrong direction. This is the kind of power which does not set us up over others, but is humble and can bring out the best in others.
