Friends in Christ Weekly Message
December 22, 2007

God, come back!
     Smile your blessing smile:
     That will be our salvation.

Psalm 80:3 (Message*)

The Hebrew people lamented the seeming absence of God, and begged for Him to restore His blessing upon them. But the reason why God seemed absent was not due to any callousness from God. It was due to the sinfulness of the people which created a barrier between them and God.

In this time of year when we celebrate the Incarnation, we should be especially mindful of God's great love and His willingness to go to extraordinary means to reach us. But He has given us freedom to reject Him, which we sometimes do with our lives even when we proclaim with our lips that we follow Christ.

If God seems absent, the fault lies not with God but ourselves. We need to humble ourselves, turn away from false gods, and open ourselves to receive God's blessing.

Have a Blessed Christmas. Take time to reflect on the meaning of God coming down to live among us as one of us.

Bill Samuel
