Friends in Christ Weekly Message
July 12, 2008
For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven,
and do not return there until they have watered the earth,
making it bring forth and sprout,
giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater,
so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth;
it shall not return to me empty,
but it shall accomplish that which I purpose,
and succeed in the thing for which I sent it.
Isaiah 55:10-11 (NRSV*)
There is a cycle by which water comes down in the form of rain and snow, waters the earth, and eventually returns to repeat the cycle. This cycle is one of the things that makes life possible. It is the way God created our world.
Similarly the word of the Lord accomplishes its purpose before returning. The metaphor can apply to any communication from God, in scripture or in His revelation directly to us. It also can apply to the Word of God as described in the beginning of the Gospel of John - Jesus, the Word made flesh. He accomplished his purpose before He ascended, even though we may not see the full fruits of that yet.
We should not be discouraged because we see evil around us, and sometimes it appears to be ascendant. We need to live in the promise that God's word will fulfill its purpose. Evil and sin shall not triumph in the end.
Bill Samuel
