Friends in Christ Weekly Message
December 13, 2008

Don't suppress the Spirit, and don't stifle those who have a word from the Master. On the other hand, don't be gullible. Check out everything, and keep only what's good. Throw out anything tainted with evil.
1 Thessalonians 5:19-22 (Message*)

Sometimes we resist hearing the word of the Lord. The message may hit too close to home, or challenge us in a way we don't feel ready to face. And sometimes the Lord will speak through someone we have trouble accepting. Christ calls us out of our comfort zones. We are tempted to discount or suppress what we have heard. But if we want to really experience the promises of God, we must resit this temptation and take to heart what the Lord speaks to us.

We also face the opposite temptation. Sometimes we are too ready to accept something because the message is something we want to hear, or we are attracted to the messenger. We have to be discerning, and not be led astray by a false message.

Are you ready to truly hear and follow the word of the Lord, no matter how uncomfortable or how unlikely the messenger seems? Are you discerning, and able to reject what is not from Christ?
