Do not worship any god except me.
Exodus 20:3 (CEV*)
This is the first injunction in the Ten Commandments. It is central to a life of faith.
For the Christian, the temptation to worship another god may often come in the guise of purity about our Christian faith. Today, I was reading in Dietrich Bonhoeffer's classic Life Together. Bonhoeffer notes the danger in Christian community of having an idealistic vision of community. The man who fashions a visionary ideal of community demands that it be realized by God, by others, and by himself. He enters the community of Christians with his demands, sets up his own law, and judges the brethren and God Himself accordingly.
The temptations to worship another god may come in many different forms. We each need to humble ourselves before God so that the Holy Spirit can speak truth to us about the ways in which we are inclined to worship other gods. We need to hear that word of truth, and allow Christ to transform us so that we only worship the true God.
