Friends in Christ Weekly Message
September 19, 2009

He sat down and summoned the Twelve. “So you want first place? Then take the last place. Be the servant of all.”
Mark 9:35 (Message*)

In our society, we are told to “look out for Number One” - meaning ourselves. We are urged to promote ourselves.

There is really nothing new about this. Jesus' disciples thought the same thing, because their society taught them that as well.

But Jesus challenged the conventional wisdom of his day and of our day. He said here and elsewhere, as well as demonstrating with his own actions, that we should not seek worldly power and position, but instead humbly serve others.

Can we truly take Jesus' countercultural advice to heart, and seek to serve rather than advance our position?

Bill Samuel
