Friends in Christ Weekly Message
March 6, 2010
As long as I live, I will pray to you.
I will sing joyful praises
and be filled with excitement like a guest at a banquet.
I think about you before I go to sleep,
and my thoughts turn to you during the night.
You have helped me,
and I sing happy songs in the shadow of your wings.
I stay close to you,
and your powerful arm supports me.
Psalm 63:4-8 (CEV*)
Jean-Paul, of the Taizé Community, writes from Haiti: I have never seen such fervent people. In all the churches and at street corners, you can see great crowds of people praying and singing the praises of the Lord. It is as if Christ were there, present, to heal Haiti. Your prayer is the finest thing you can offer the people of Haiti at this time.
These Haitians are sharing the experience of David when he wrote this psalm. David, too, was in a difficult situation - in the wilderness. David and the Haitians praying and singing remind us that, even in the time of greatest difficulty, the faithful devote themselves to praising God.
How often do we, not in the kind of circumstances of David or the people of Haiti, fail to fill our lives with praises to God? No matter your circumstance, praise God fervently. And as you acknowledge God's great love, your heart will flow out to people in desperate circumstances, like those in Haiti, whom God loves so much. You will naturally pray for them, and provide other support as you are able and are led.
