The Lord is my God!
I will praise him and tell him how thankful I am.
Tell the Lord how thankful you are,
because he is kind and always merciful.
Psalm 118:28-29 (CEV*)
The theme of praise and thankfulness comes up over and over again in the scriptures, and especially so in the Psalms. All the repetition emphasizes its importance in our lives. We are called to live our lives praising and thanking God.
In this excerpt, the psalmist gives two reasons for this praise and thankfulness. One is that the Lord is my God. Our God is not distant and impersonal. Our God cares about each one of us.
Secondly, the Lord is kind and always merciful. We may turn from God at times and make all manner of mistakes. Yet God remains kind and merciful to us, responding to us with a steadfast love.
Regardless of our current circumstances, we are to praise and thank God. We have limited ability to control our circumstances; we can control how we respond to them. Our lives will be blessed if we praise and thank God in all circumstances.
