Friends in Christ Weekly Message
May 15, 2010

I am not praying just for these followers. I am also praying for everyone else who will have faith because of what my followers will say about me. I want all of them to be one with each other, just as I am one with you and you are one with me. I also want them to be one with us. Then the people of this world will believe that you sent me.
John 17:20-21 (CEV*)

Jesus wants all his followers to be one with each other. He prays fervently for this.

This is not just a sentimental wish on his part. He wants the world to see our love for one another to model the love between Jesus and God. It will be a demonstration of the truth Christ proclaims.

I could raise all sorts of questions about how to carry this out in the real world. However, I realize that raising them tends to lead to division. If we are truly one with Christ, won't we be naturally led to express this oneness in Christ the way he intends? Perhaps we will see no need to rationally figure out all the implications and judge with whom this unity is to be.

Shall we join our Lord, Savior, Redeemer, and Friend in his prayer for unity of believers? And may we humble ourselves and submit to his direction to live that out in our lives.

Bill Samuel
