Friends in Christ Weekly Message
August 14, 2010
Be fair to the poor and to orphans.
Defend the helpless and everyone in need.
Rescue the weak and homeless
from the powerful hands of heartless people.
Psalm 82:3-4 (CEV*)
God's concern for the poor and outcast is repeated over and over in the Hebrew and Christian scriptures. Many oppressed and impoverished people have found hope in the message of scripture over the centuries.
The psalmist is speaking to the rulers and those who are well off. Those of us who are relatively well placed in the social structure are reminded that we are to support and to advocate for the poor, the weak, and the homeless.
Christians may disagree on the best ways to carry out this call, but we should be united in feeling the need to stand with the poor and the outcast. How are you living out this call in your life?
