Friends in Christ Weekly Message
December 4, 2010

Even if it was written in Scripture long ago, you can be sure it's written for us. God wants the combination of his steady, constant calling and warm, personal counsel in Scripture to come to characterize us, keeping us alert for whatever he will do next.
Romans 15:4 (Message*)

Scripture was written thousands of years ago. Yet it still teaches us today. It contains stories and timeless truths that reach over the generations and continue to speak to us today.

Eugene Peterson's contemporary paraphrase of this verse emphasizes the combination of God's calling to us in each moment and the counsel of scripture. Scripture comes alive and rightly leads us when we are listening to God here and now, recognizing the constant divine presence in our lives. The true message of scripture for us today does not come from a purely intellectual reading of words. It comes from being bathed in the Spirit which inspired the writers of scripture.
