Friends in Christ Weekly Message
October 13, 2012
[NOTE: This message was originally published November 16, 2002.]
Teach us to use wisely all the time we have.
Psalm 90:12 (CEV*)
I know I sometimes fritter away time, spending it on things of very little value. This has always been a problem for people, although we probably have more ways to waste time than any prior generation.
There are a variety of time management programs available, complete with calendars in either paper or software form. These may be useful in helping us to devote more time to the things we decide are of highest priority, but they can't tell us what values we should live our lives by nor how God wants to use our particular gifts and talents.
The psalmist is reaching more deeply than the developers of time management programs. He is seeking to live by God's values with God's leadings for his life. There is only one who can truly teach us to do that.
In order to allow Christ to be our Inward Teacher, guiding us through our days, we need to take time to know Him and to listen to Him. We need to turn off our TVs, radios, CD players, telephones and computers, and make some quiet time to listen to God's still, small voice and to develop a conversational relationship. If we are faithful in seeking Him and in being truly open to His direction for our lives, we will find we are taught to use wisely all the time we have.
