Friends in Christ Weekly Message
June 1, 2013

Elijah stood in front of them and said, “How much longer will you try to have things both ways? If the LORD is God, worship him! But if Baal is God, worship him!”

The people did not say a word.

1 Kings 18:21 (CEV*)

Aside from the reference to a specific god worshipped by a particular group long ago, is this not perhaps a question we need to be asking ourselves all the time? We may profess allegiance to Christ, but do we show that by consistently following Christ's ways?

Do we try to have things both ways, professing Christ but sometimes acting like we believe in “the god of this world”? Do we sometimes give in to the temptation to follow the world's way of seeking fulfillment through such things as material possessions, social status, and sexual gratification outside of a covenantal relationship?

Whether we are actually living day by day, moment by moment, according to the way of Christ is something we need to examine frequently, in both personal reflection and in honest sharing with other believers.
