Friends in Christ Weekly Message
January 17, 2015

[NOTE: This message was originally published January 18, 2003. One slight change made.]
Oh yes, you shaped me first inside, then out;
     you formed me in my mother's womb.
I thank you, High God - you're breathtaking!
     Body and soul, I am marvelously made!
     I worship in adoration - what a creation!

Psalm 139:13-14 (Message*)

This is a particularly meaningful passage for me. My mother was not supposed to be able to have any more children. When she did get pregnant, she was told there was a high probability of miscarriage. As the pregnancy progressed and it appeared that it would come to term, the doctors were certain that if I lived I would be severely handicapped, both physically and mentally. In the end, I was a very healthy baby, and I have lived 67 healthy years thus far.

My mother turned me over to God not long after learning she was pregnant. And she always believed this made all the difference. Medically, what happened seemed impossible. But God is indeed breathtaking, as Eugene Peterson's translation of this powerful passage says. Nothing is impossible with God. (See Matthew 19:26, Mark 10:27, Luke 18:27.)

I relate very personally to this passage. But the development and birth of a baby is always marvelous, even without the dramatic circumstances of my own birth. We should never take the miracles of God's creation for granted. We need to maintain a state of awe about them, and forever praise God.

In our own human arrogance, we often seek to control things and interfere with the wonder of God's creation. Incredibly, we seem to think we know better than God what is possible and what is best. In the United States, this Sunday has been declared National Sanctity of Human Life Day. May we take this time to especially remember who is the true giver of life, and "worship in adoration" of God's breathtaking creation.

Dear friends, reflect on the wonder of God's creation, with humans and with everything else God has made. Respect and honor this creation. Worship God without restraint in adoration.

Bill Samuel
