Friends in Christ Weekly Message
March 12, 2016
I am creating something new.
There it is! Do you see it?
I have put roads in deserts,
streams in thirsty lands.
Every wild animal honors me,
even jackals and owls.
I provide water in deserts - streams in thirsty lands
for my chosen people.
I made them my own nation,
so they would praise me.
Isaiah 43:19-21 (CEV*)
This was written within a particular historical context. But it is part of the Lenten lectionary because Lent relates to God doing something new again.
There is a dynamic process in history of God doing something new. There are hints in this passage of even grander prophecies we find in the Hebrew scriptures. In part, this passage is telling poetically about something which actually happened. But not all of it came to fruition, and this is certainly true in some of the broader prophecies. But God is still at work, and eventually all of God's creatures and all of creation will be brought into harmony - made new in a wonderful way.
We are to look for the ways God is working to make things new in our time. Just as in the times told about in the Hebrew scriptures where God was working, God's people are to cooperate with God in this process of creating something new.
How do you see God working to make things new? How are you cooperating with God in this?
Bill Samuel
