Friends in Christ Weekly Message
June 28, 2000
...as men and women yield to the power of God thus inwardly revealed, they are cleansed and purified, becoming instructed more and more in the things pertaining to the kingdom of God, as they are able to bear and receive it, till they are fitted and qualified for service in whatever sphere the Head of the Church may in His wisdom see meet.
-from a message sent by the Meeting of Ministers and Elders of Ohio Yearly Meeting of Friends in 1931
This message, carried in a newsletter I received today in the mail, speaks powerfully to me. It is Jesus Christ, the head of the church, who ordains people to particular service. No formal educational program can qualify people for Christian service, although some may be called by God to receive such training to better equip them in that service.
We must indeed yield to the power of God inwardly revealed to us by Christ. This is the way we become fitted for service. This power indeed does cleanse and purify us, and instructs us in a deeper way than any academic program can.
The faith community should support and encourage men and women ready to yield to the power of God. It should be an incubator, so to speak, of the new creation we become in Christ. It should be a setting in which Christ transforms lives.
Friends in Christ is a fairly new ministry. But already we have seen men and women being cleansed and purified, and instructed more and more in the things pertaining to the kingdom of God. And we have seen the service to which God has appointed them opening up before them as this happens. We hear them testify of the transformation in their lives and of becoming fitted for service in Christ's kingdom.
Praise God!
