Friends in Christ Weekly Message
February 5, 2005
Why the big noise, nations?
Why the mean plots, peoples?
Earth-leaders push for position,
Demagogues and delegates meet for summit talks,
The God-deniers, the Messiah-defiers:
"Let's get free of God!
Cast loose from Messiah!"
Heaven-throned God breaks out laughing.
At first he's amused at their presumption;
Then he gets good and angry.
Furiously, he shuts them up:
"Don't you know there's a King in Zion? A coronation banquet
Is spread for him on the holy summit."
Psalm 2:1-6 (Message*)
We can see the world's political leaders jockeying for power. Whether or not they claim to be religious, too often they act as if it is they who are key, not God. Meanwhile, many people suffer under unjust laws, oppressive economic conditions and abuses of power.
We who understand that it is God who is the true source of power need to be in prayer for our political leaders. We need to pray that they humble themselves and listen to God's voice as they govern and propose programs. May they see themselves as servants, treating the governed in the spirit of Christ.
May those of us given prophetic calls to speak truth to worldly power faithfully fulfill our calls from God. My we spend much time in prayer so that God has plenty of opportunity to work within us, may we be ready to test our leadings with elders in our faith communities, and may we be humble but fearless in our prophetic witness.
