Friends in Christ Weekly Message
February 12, 2005

Finally, the devil took Jesus up on a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms on earth and their power. The devil said to him, "I will give all this to you, if you will bow down and worship me."
Jesus answered, "Go away Satan! The Scriptures say:
'Worship the Lord your God and serve only him.' "
Matthew 4:8-10 (CEV*)

The temptations of Jesus represent, in part, types of temptations we face throughout our lives. We may never face them in so dramatic a fashion, but we face them in the choices we make day by day.

In many little ways, we face the temptation of earthly power and wealth. We may strive to get ahead in the world's terms, and compromise our professed faith in doing so. We are tempted frequently to sell our souls a little piece at a time - and occasionally a larger piece.

May we each follow the example of Jesus and keep a single-minded focus on God and God's purposes. May we turn aside from every temptation to stray from that focus and give in to the gods of this world.

Bill Samuel
