Friends in Christ Weekly Message
June 17, 2006

But the Lord told him, “Samuel, don't think Eliab is the one just because he's tall and handsome. He isn't the one I've chosen. People judge others by what they look like, but I judge people by what is in their hearts.”
1 Samuel 16:7 (CEV*)

Samuel had been sent by the Lord to anoint a new king, who was to be one of the sons of Jesse. When Samuel saw Jesse's eldest son Eliab and observed that he was tall and handsome, Samuel assumed he must be the one the Lord would anoint.

But God isn't concerned with outward appearances, as people generally are. God looks on our hearts. Whether we're tall or short, slim or stout, strong in body or weak, beautiful or ugly is not what's important in God's eyes.

Do you look at people through God's eyes or through worldly eyes? Do you focus on what's in a person's heart, or on outward characteristics like appearance, health, wealth, position, etc.?

Bill Samuel
