Friends in Christ Weekly Message
June 24, 2006

The LORD is a refuge for the oppressed,
a stronghold in times of trouble.
Those who know your name will trust in you,
for you, LORD, have never forsaken those who seek you.

Psalm 9:9-10 (NIV*)

When people are oppressed or in trouble, there is someone they can turn to - God. While they may be forsaken by all those around them, God will never forsake them as long as they turn to Him. This is a promise repeated over and over in various ways in scripture.

Have you ever noticed that many who are most fervent in their devotion to God are those who have the least in this world? Those who are affluent and comfortable are often inclined to trust in their own strength rather than in the Lord. They have a harder time accepting dependence upon God, the only true source of strength that lasts.

Only God can be counted on in all circumstances and at all times. Our material circumstances can easily change; and our friends may turn from us, become weak in mind and body, or die. If we don't truly trust in the Lord, we can be left without a reliable source of strength.

Do you truly know and put your trust in God? As one of God's people, do you share and show God's heart for the oppressed and troubled?

Bill Samuel
