Friends in Christ Weekly Message
September 25, 2010
Lust for money brings trouble and nothing but trouble. Going down that path, some lose their footing in the faith completely and live to regret it bitterly ever after.
But you, Timothy, man of God: Run for your life from all this. Pursue a righteous life - a life of wonder, faith, love, steadiness, courtesy. Run hard and fast in the faith. Seize the eternal life, the life you were called to, the life you so fervently embraced in the presence of so many witnesses.
1 Timothy 6:10-12 (Message*)
In our society, we are taught to strive to be successful in worldly terms - large income, big house, prestigious car, etc. We are flooded with advertisements which tell us that we can have happiness by owning things. If we follow this siren call, we can lose our footing in the faith. This will not bring happiness, but bitterness.
We are to run from the false gods the world presents and instead pursue a righteous life. We are to seize the eternal life here and now. This isn't the boring, humdrum life some skeptics suspect. It is the joyous life of abundance that our Lord promised - an abundance which is not dependent on how much we have materially.
Bill Samuel
